Our Engagement story

January 1, 2008

David wanted to spend the night in Pasadena to watch the Rose parade. Which we didn’t end up doing that because I wasn’t feeling well and thought the cold would be unbearable. We decided to spend New Years with my family and then drive early to the Rose Parade the following morning. After watching the rose parade we were walking back to the car and I apologized to him for missing out on the sleep over and tried to comfort him by saying that we would spend the night the following New Year’s eve. His response was a shock to me because he said that we would probably be married by next New Years, I stayed quiet just pondering what he said and then he said another shocker “let me know when you want to go ring shopping”. I could not believe my ears and questioned him twice about his seriousness. David said that he was serious and then I got scared and said "I am not ready to talk about that yet".

The next week I pondered it out in my mind and started to enjoy the idea of being married to David. I told him that I was ready to go ring shopping and we decided to do it on MLK day. However, on the 16th we ended up at Robbins Brothers. The Saturday before MLK day we ended up buying a ring at Macy’s in South Coast plaza but ended up returning it because we found a better deal on the ring that I am currently wearing. When I choose it out it had to be placed and sized. David decided to stay out in Covina and pick it up the next morning with his mother.

David tortured me with having the ring and not telling me when he was going to give it to me. I was way too excited. The only thing keeping him from asking was the conversion he needed to have with my daddy first. Which he ended up doing yesterday while eating at Cocos. Finally, today he found the most perfect way to ask me. Ever since we started dating I have been bugging him to take me Hiking up to the C placed on the mountains behind UCR. Today he picked me up after my Comparative politics class and then took me to park the car for my long awaited hike. We were concerned to see if we would even be able to hike because the rain clouds were moving in. To our surprise the mountain was right under a big sunny hole in the mist of the dark rain clouds. The weather proved inviting enough for us to attempt the climb before the wind blew the stormy rain clouds over our heads.

Since we had never done the hike we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We followed the trail that seemed to lead up to our goal. Right when we were about to head off track by following a trail that lead us away from our goal, we ran into a lady that pointed us into the right direction. This wouldn’t have been a detail to write about except for the fact that any wasted time would have make us lose the race we were having with the rain.

The rigorous trail’s slope up to the C was VERY steep! I had to stop a few times just to catch my breath. Sometimes I had to hold on to rocks just to keep my balance other times David would help push me up (I love him)! As I was climbing I couldn’t help but to compare our hike up this hill to the journey we could have as husband and wife, at times we would go off in a direction that would lead us astray, but if we ask for help we will receive guidance on the direction we should follow. I also thought about the times were he would have to push me along and how much I appreciated that he had the strength to not only get up himself but help me as well. I love his strength and not just the physical but mostly the Spiritual he is such an example to me and I would confront any obstacle as long as I had him beside me. The last stretch of trial was the hardest and I had to push myself extra hard to make it, what made it easier was that I could see our goal so close and knew that it would soon be over.

Of course the first thing we did was sit down to rest to catch our breaths. As we were sitting all tired, nasty and sweaty we realized that we did not have a lot of time before it was going to start pouring on us. David pulls out his Patriarchal blessing and asked me to read the part about his future wife. By that time I figured out what he was about to do and started to break down. As he handed the blessing over to me I caught a glimpse of it saying something about his wife journeying with him on the paths of life and this made me brake down even more because of all the spiritual impressions I received along our path up the mountain. Honestly, I felt the spirit so strong and was overcome with such immense emotion that I could hardly speak. I handed the blessing over to him and he himself had to struggle with his tears to read it to me. After reading it he said that I was the girl his blessing was talking about. Then he took out the ring and finished his perfect proposal with the famous question, ”will you marry me?” I still could not even get out a yes so he had to say it for me and I just nodded my head. It was such a beautiful experience that I will never forget. On the way down David said that the C stood for Celestial Kingdom, which is where I want to be with him forever.
